I will start by saying that I am not a full-time developer as I am in graduate school so much of the I was working on school or my other job and saw this as more of a fun time dump to invest in. That being said, that means I probably could have finished the project in 1 year rather than 1.5 if I had fully devoted my time to it. I did do all of the programming with some help along the way, all of the art, and story while my brother did all the music. Here are some of my key takeaways:
The game development process has never been more easy or accessible until now. I was able to make something like this in such a short period of time with 0 prior coding knowledge. I used mainly YouTube tutorials at first and then once I had the basics down was able to troubleshoot a lot with ChatGPT.
If you have a dream or vision just start and do a little each day. I started to realize that oftentimes when I was stuck on something or working tirelessly on something forever, taking a break and switching to something else or doing a different activity usually allowed me to find the solution more easily. This is also a big mental health buff lol.
Set goals but be ok with not reaching them. One thing I learned working alone is that it's good to be ambitious, but you also need to show yourself grace when you fall short or don't quite follow through.
I don't usually post these types of things but I figured this would be a good way of officially ending this project. I hope this inspires someone or is helpful to someone who is doing this or wants to do this.
Also shameless plug lol...
